I hope this is ok with you all to ask questions. Hopefully one of you will know the answer. So, I am going to make an extract brew this weekend for a group of people interested in home brewing. The all grain would take way to long for the alotted time. If the recipe calls for 7lbs. light, dry malt extract, can I substitue with 8.4 lbs. of syrup extract? Can you mix syrup and dry maly extract? What is the coreect conversion?

You can certainly mix syrup (LME) and DME. In fact may BYO recipes call for both, with the LME added as a late addition to the boil. I tend to prefer liquid malt extract as I have less issues with boil over and it’s generally cheaper.
DME is more concentrated simply because more water has been removed from it than from LME. 1 lb DME = .8 lb LME. So if you’re converting from DME to LME multiply by 1.25.
    Hope this helps.

If anyone is interested entering any of their brews (IBAs maybe?) into another homebrew contest, the homebrew club in Bozeman (the Bridger Brew Crew) is hosting a competition with a deadline of March 6th.
I’ll be in Missoula the first week of March and could deliver entries back to Bozeman if anyone is interested.

What: Homebrew Contest; this is your chance to see how the brews you’ve been bragging about measure up!

When: The deadline for entries is March 6th, with judging to follow.

Where: Drop off your entries (up to 2 per person/team) at Madison River Brewing Company,
20900 Frontage Road, Building B, Belgrade, MT

Who: Sponsored by the Bridger Brew Crew, but we need you to enter your beer!

Why: Beer Swag! and to see if your beer lives up to your hype.
The Grand Prize winner of “Best in Show” will get their beer entered into the Regional Qualifier for the National Homebrew Contest. Other prizes to be announced, but will include swag from local breweries, brew pubs, and more…

Rules: There is no limit to the style(s) of beer that may be entered; however, entries will be judged to BJCP style guidelines.
A modest entry fee of $1 per entry with a maximum 2 entries per person/team.
Entries should be packaged into three 12 oz or larger umarked bottles and be accompanied by a sheet labeled with your name, phone number, and BJCP style number.

Be sure to check for updates, complete contest rules, and the growing list of prizes at the Bridger Brew Crew website @ http://www.brewmontana.com.

Feel free to address any questions to me or to info@brewmontana.com.
